"Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith."

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

"The best of you is one who is best towards his family. As for me, I am best amongst you towards my family"

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) "never beat anyone with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant."

Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1082

"And do not retain them (i.e. women) in wedlock against their will in order to hurt them. He who does such a thing indeed sins against himself. And do not take the signs of God lightly..."

The Holy Quran, Chapter The Cow, Verse 231

Local Help

If you are a victim of violence or abuse, you may be afraid to seek help in case he might find out and want to retaliate.  You may be burdened by guilt thinking that to expose your spouse would bring shame to the family. Most victims cannot simply leave their homes, their jobs, their children’s schools, their friends, and their relatives to escape their abuser. They depend upon police to enforce the law against physical abuse.  Yet, police cannot act until a restraining order is violated or until some physical harm again befalls the victim.[1]

Domestic violence specialists are standing by to help you talk through your problems and help create a safety plan to leave.  They can assist you through financial assistance, children services, shelters, counseling, transportation, legal services, immigration specialists, career development, and translation services.  The National Domestic Violence Hotline has translators of over 170 languages and they have access to 5000 local Domestic Violence centers, including Muslim Domestic Violence centers.

You can discuss your concerns, ask questions, and get help with a 24hr domestic violence specialist, by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224
